The ban was put in place two weeks ago after confirmed outbreaks of foot and mouth disease among cattle in the UK. An EU ban on meat exports from the UK was quickly set up, and Jersey banned importation of some animal products and meat from animals slaughtered during the foot and mouth period. Environment Minister Freddie Cohen met States Vet Linda Lowsec and Environment chief officer Paul Nichols to discuss the removal of the ban this morning, and said the restrictions were likely to be relaxed. ‘There will still be a whole group of meat from animals killed between the start of the foot and mouth incubation period and 25 August which we will have to keep controls on,’ said Senator Cohen. He added he expected a full interpretation of last night’s EU decision later today. Last night, the UK government removed a UK-wide ban on livestock movement.
