Speaking to the JEP about new proposals for a National Gallery at the Weighbridge, of which Sir Philip is an enthusiastic supporter, he pressed the Island’s claim to a national identity distinct from that of the UK. ‘Over the last few years it seems to me that we have been thinking of ourselves much more as a small nation,’ said Sir Philip. ‘The Chief Minister is trying to encourage respect for our national identity. ‘I think we are just as much of a nation as the Scots are a nation. They have their National Gallery and I think we ought to have the National Gallery of Jersey. I think it is a very appropriate description of what will be an important public building.’
