Les Landes Primary School pupil Laurence Quénault was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of four and has to undergo a stringent daily routine to cope with the condition. He has to have his fingers regularly pricked to check his levels of glucose, has to have three injections of insulin a day, and must eat regularly and be careful about what he eats. Although his teachers were aware of his condition, Laurence wanted his fellow pupils to understand more about it, and after speaking to his head teacher the school agreed to hold a non-uniform day to raise both money and awareness. Laurence and his parents produced information sheets to hand out and £120 was raised from the day. There are currently more than two million people with diabetes in the UK and another 750,000 who have the condition but do not know it. Laurence is determined not to let the condition prevent him from living a normal and active lifestyle. A big football fan, he is a member of both Chris Jones’ Soccer School and the Les Landes football team.
