In her second annual report on the Island’s health which is published today, Dr Rosemary Geller spells out the dangers of our culture of heavy boozing. Dr Geller also highlights the startling statistic that St Helier town, with all its bedsits and lower paid workers, is more deprived, according to an internationally recognised social deprivation scale, than the UK average. Dr Geller also reports that the number of abortions has fallen by a third since terminations were legalised in Jersey in 1997. The first year the procedure was carried out in Jersey, there were more than 300 terminations. Last year, there were just over 200.
