Concern steps up its population campaign

Concern say that ‘unbridled growth’ is eating away at quality of life in the Island. In Saturday’s JEP they took out a full page advertisement to ask ten questions that they say Ministers should be asking themselves. They are: In whose ‘back-yard’ will you build the hundreds of new homes that will now be required . . . St Helier? St Clement? Grouville? Trinity? Which part of Jersey’s coast do you plan to exploit for the land reclamation which will inevitably be required to dispose of increasing amounts of rubble and rubbish? And ten years after that? In which parts of the Island will you build the two? . . . three? . . . four? new schools that will become necessary ? As crime inevitably increases, where will you build the new prison that will be needed . . . Noirmont? Les Landes? North Coast? What realistic and effective transport plans do you have to cope with the demand for hundreds of extra cars? How do you propose to deal with the consequential problem of ever-growing queues of people at the General Hospital waiting for treatment? As social problems inevitably multiply, how many more teachers, police, health workers, probation officers, civil servants etc will be needed to cope? Are the Island’s already stretched water resources sufficient to supply the growth in population that you are encouraging? Are you totally convinced that continued large-scale immigration will not have an adverse effect on job opportunities and the incomes of existing residents and businesses? At what stage in population growth will you say that ‘enough is enough’ . . . 90,000? 95,000? 100,000? 150,000? . . .
