At the Plage des Cavaliers in Anglet, in the south west, Jersey’s Christian Boletta reached the last eight of the Open division in heavy and dangerous conditions – one female competitor having been rescued from the strong onshore conditions early today.
Freedom surf shop manager Clayton Lidster (37) got the CI contingent off to a flying start today by winning the répérchargé final.
Lidster’s victory included the highest scoring wave of the day at the time to qualify him for the masters section grand final.
Yesterday the CI had a good day accumulating enough points to move them above England and into fifth place with the Welsh now in their sights.
Longboarders Ben Skinner and Gordon Blake are in the repercharge semi-finals today, if they gain first or second places they progress to the final with further success promoting them to the grand final.
In the senior men’s section, Scott Eastwood has moved to the progression final stages today along with Clayton Lidster in the masters.
First and second places today would secure the duo grand final slots.
In the Open division, all surfers are through the second round with the exception of Guernsey’s Matt Le Maistre.
Boletta was outstanding yesterday together with Guernsey’s Tom Hill, both without surfing any répérchargé heats.
Unfortunately there were casualties in the women’s division with Arlene Maltman and Shelley Macfarling exiting despite spirited performances in 6-8 foot heavy conditions.
Bodyboarders Clint Loake and Colin Laurent failed to progess from their group.
All eyes today will focus on the open division and senior men and masters and good results here, should propel the Freedom and Quiksilver CI team up the leaderboard as all competitors continue their quests for individual medals.
