When police officers arrived at the Eagle Tavern on the night of the attack, they found the off-duty manageress ‘drunk’ and the barman ‘intoxicated’. In the Royal Court yesterday, the Licensing Assembly shut the pub with immediate effect. It will not be allowed to reopen until at least September, the earliest an application will be accepted to renew its licence. By then the licensee, Kevin Davies, will have to show that he can run a pub responsibly and train his staff properly. Mr Davies is the tenant of the Eagle Tavern and the Bagot Inn, both of which are owned by Randalls brewery. The managing director of Randalls, David Le Quesne, has defended Mr Davies, likening the assembly to a ‘kangaroo court’.
