GR Langlois director Mark Le Boutillier says that reluctance to rezone land for housing is leaving hundreds of Islanders paying high rent in private accommodation because they cannot get on the property ladder. In a letter in today’s JEP, Mr Le Boutillier says that his company carried out a survey of all 37,000 households in the Island and found that over 500 families were looking for three-bedroom houses. And he says that politicians need to start ‘fighting the corner’ of first-time buyers and Islanders need to get behind the re zoning of land identified in the Island Plan 2002. ‘The re zoning of land for housing is always going to be a sensitive issue,’ he says. ‘Some members of the general public along with certain politicians amazingly seem intent on doing all they can to prevent sites identified for first-time-buyer housing from being developed. They are therefore preventing young families in their own parishes from having the chance of owning their own home.’
