The survey was launched by UK zoologist Pat Morris and Dru Burdon from the Jersey Hedgehog Preservation Group. Mr Morris, a former lecturer of zoology at the University of London who specialised in mammal ecology, visited the Island to encourage as many people as possible to provide information. He said a UK study had shown that over a ten-year period the number of hedgehogs being killed on the roads had dropped by 30 per cent – which at first glance sounds like good news but could be indicative of a fall in the mammal’s population. ‘The number of cars around certainly has not decreased and so it appears there are fewer hedgehogs around,’ he said.
