The Treasury Department have this morning released the Public Sector Manpower report for December 2006, which shows a 1.3% increase in the number of people employed by the States. The figures come just days after Treasury Minister Terry Le Sueur defended his record on cost-cutting and pointed out that Jersey spends the second-lowest proportion of GDP on public services out of all the OECD countries. They also follow criticism by the reformed Angry Men pressure group, the Chamber of Commerce and the Institute of Directors about excessive States spending. Of the 82 new staff: 66 are at Health and Social Services. 12 are at Education. Ten are at Social Security. Only three departments – Treasury, Economic Development and Transport – lost staff during the 12 months up until last December.
