Jersey’s emissions will form part of the UK’s allowance and so there is no specific target for the Island where gas emissions have fallen by 36 per cent since 1990 due almost entirely to the switch to importing electricity from France. However, Chief Minister Frank Walker said Jersey wanted to play its part in combating climate change. The Island applied to come under the Kyoto Protocol last year and the Chief Minister said the extension to the Island was welcome news. ‘We heard from Professor Sir David King when he spoke in Jersey at the Opera House, warning how climate change is an issue of major importance for the world in this century,’ he said. ‘Jersey wants to play its part in combating climate change and we will go further than the 36% reduction on greenhouse gas emissions that we have already achieved with new measures that will shortly be announced when the Energy Policy consultation document is launched.’
