Kate and Gerry McCann’s traumatic ordeal following their daughter’s abduction 11 days ago from their hotel bedroom in the Algarve resort of Praia da Luz has touched the hearts of people around the world. The leader of the busy Georgetown toddler group, Beverly Waller, set up the informal but poignant event yesterday and the group are due to hold a similar meeting tomorrow morning. The Rev Chris White said that when Mrs Waller had suggested the candle vigils, he had given the group his full support. ‘Some years ago members of our congregation were very upset at the death of a little girl linked with the church and they lit candles on the family’s behalf,’ he said. He said that sad event was still very much in the minds of everyone and the abduction of Maddie McCann had reminded them of the grief felt by the parents. ‘Little Madeleine is very much in the forefront of everyone’s minds at the moment, especially parents with toddlers like her,’ he said.
