Chef de Police David Christie claims that his paid colleagues are picking on soft targets and responsible drivers who have never been in trouble before. And he is worried that they are now keen to book drivers who would have been given a word of warning in the past. But the States police have defended the camera’s use. Ch insp David Minty said that speeding was a cause of major public concern. Centenier Christie has also revealed that the parishes are struggling to cope with the number of cases being generated by the new camera, which takes pictures of speeding motorists which are then sent to the driver as proof. Many of the motorists are being caught in the 30 mile an hour zone on the underpass. The 12 Chefs de Police met recently to discuss how to reduce the current four-month backlog of cases. Centenier Christie said: ‘We are rapidly reaching crisis point. With the new speed camera, we have had an inundation of parish hall inquiries for people doing no more than seven or eight miles an hour over the limit in places like the underpass. I feel that the police are aiming for soft targets. ‘It is all too easy to do six or seven or eight miles an hour over the limit, especially through the underpass. It is very difficult to stick to the limit. I find it difficult myself, and I am surprised I have not been stopped.
