Work on the north apron, which covers the aircraft parking stands and taxiway to the west of the arrivals hall, began last September and was completed on time and within budget. More than 30,000 sq metres of 40-year-old concrete was broken up, removed and replaced with 27,000 sq metres of new material, built to handle the latest and future aircraft expected to use the Airport. Fixed generators which can provide power to parked aircraft when their engines are shut down have also been installed. These are quieter and cleaner than the mobile ‘ground power units’ currently used.
