A number of schools have contacted the commissioner worried about whether they were complying with the law. Most schools are covered by an umbrella agreement with the Education department, although they must also register individually to show how they are using cameras and the images they are recording. The JEP understands that De La Salle College may have fallen outside that agreement. Any school that started using CCTV cameras since December 2005, when the law came into effect, and had not registered with Data Protection had been breaking the law. De La Salle introduced cameras in the Christmas holidays but did not register until after the JEP’s story earlier this month. College head teacher Jason Turner has declined to comment.
