There are ten species of bat in the Island, and they have been listed as endangered in the Environment department’s Biodiversity Action Plans to save animals, plants and insects whose numbers have reduced. With this in mind, the group have reformed to carry out work in providing increased habitats around the Island for bat roosts and helping to preserve those already in place. Group president Hugh Forshaw said that bats were among the most maligned of mammals. ‘When you study them, you realise that they are among the most fascinating and skilful of our native species,’ he said.
