The chairman of the Jersey Air Passengers Association, John Fitzpatrick, said local travellers should not fly with the airline in protest at the introduction of the new charges from next Tuesday. The price for a long-haul return flight will rise by £240 if a passenger puts two bags into the aircraft’s hold, they will pay an extra £120 on short-haul returns and £60 on domestic returns. The rule means customers will be able to put a single bag weighing a maximum of 23 kg into the aircraft hold. BA say they will not discriminate against travellers ‘if it is clear a passenger cannot manage one bag’. It will let them check in an additional bag, or more, provided the total weight is within the 23 kg limit. But most travellers will pay the extra charges even if the combined weight of any two bags is below the limit. Mr Fitzpatrick said this will affect many Jersey passengers who fly with BA.
