States police chief Graham Power revealed that the new system ensures an audit trail if a challenge is later made against any permissions granted. Mr Power said it was a matter of public record that the police had bugged people’s homes, phones and cars in past cases. However, until now, officers could potentially be accused of fabricating paperwork after the event. Mr Power said the States police have been following best practice in the UK but said that when the new law is in place, anyone who does not follow the procedures will be acting illegally. He said that a senior officer conducting an investigation into a serious crime would apply to him in the first instance and ask the chief to consider making an application to the Attorney General for a warrant.
