The owner of Jersey Bio Fuels is now producing a diesel substitute which is made out of old vegetable oil from restaurants and pubs around Jersey. He says that it is not only greener and cheaper than ordinary diesel, it also generates more power and is smoother. There is one side-effect, though. Rather than smelling of diesel fumes, vehicles running on vegetable oil smell of chips – or whatever has been cooked in the oil. Nick, who was recently featured in the JEP’s Motoring supplement after completing a charity banger rally from Plymouth to Banjul in the Gambia, said: ‘My Daihatsu van is running on it and so is one of the Renault skip lorries where I used to work. I am currently running my van on around 70 per cent biofuel. By the summer, when it is warmer, I hope to be running on 90 per cent.
