Turner on target for Games repeat

The duo are among a four-person team selected by the Jersey Smallbore Shooting Association, the others are newcomers Chantelle Ward and Aebhanne Rees-Williams who will compete in the air rifle women’s individual section.

Douglas and Turner, who is recovering from surgery after having a mechanical aortic valve fitted, also won individual gold and silver respectively in Shetland two years ago.

Shane Lopez Rubio is named as team manager.

Commonwealth Games marksman Turner said: ‘I’m still doing my rehab, it’s going all right and I’m making steady progress.

‘I’m taking steps in the right direction and I’m delighted to have been selected for Rhodes.

‘I didn’t pick up a rifle again until a couple of days before the trial shoots before Christmas – it was a gamble, I felt strange, I was nervous and I didn’t know how I was going to do.

‘Thankfully, it went superbly and I shot just a couple of points below my personal best.

It was a dream start in the first of three trial shoots and I don’t know where it came from.

‘That settled me for the other shoots and now I’ve qualified I’m really looking forward to the Games.

Rhodes was my target last year, my target when I get there will be to shoot a personal best score and hopefully that will result in Scott and myself doing well.’ Douglas, who is JSSA assistant press officer, said: ‘The ladies have done well too, Chantelle and Aebhanne have only been shooting for just under a year and in that time they’ve showed potential and commitment.

‘It’s the first ladies’ air rifle shooters that Jersey has sent to an Island Games for many years and I hope they both do well.’ Junior Island champion Ward (19), works in marketing, and Rees-Williams (29) in finance.

Both women are coached by Douglas and Turner.

Rhodes recently decided to include the ISSF 50m Prone Smallbore Rifle in their shooting programme.

Jersey’s selectors will announce their team for that discipline, which has received 14 entries, next month.
