The inquest was opened by Deputy Viscount Peter de Gruchy and adjourned so the body could be released to the family for the funeral.

Mr de Gruchy read out a report from pathologist Dr Peter Southall who said Mr Fernandes’ death was caused by multiple injuries.

Investigating officer P con Christina Maclennon said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of Mr Fernandes, a single man who was born in Madeira and lived in St Helier.

Emergency services were called to Noirmont Point on Monday shortly after 9 am after the crew of the Commodore Goodwill raised the alarm when seeing the car at the foot of the cliff.

Mr Fernandes was discovered lying 30 ft away from a red Volkswagen Lupo which was registered in his name.
