The committee with responsibility for States reform have come up with four models for a reformed States Chamber, and are writing to every Island household.
The Constables’ seats are safe under all four options after a recent Mori poll found that 54% of respondents wanted them to remain, compared to 35% who wanted to get rid of them.
The Privileges and Procedures Committee made reform of the States one of their top priorities when they were set up a year ago.
Chairman Derek Gray, the Constable of St Clement, said he hoped that involving the public in the changes would help develop a consensus in an area which has divided the States.
He also hoped it would help improve Jersey’s woeful electoral turnout figures.
Last year there were turnouts of 42.5% and 33.8% in the Senatorial and Deputy elections respectively, compared to 64% in Guernsey and 61% in the Isle of Man.
