At a packed Town Hall, members of the Transport and General Workers Union backed the strike vote in protest at the States-side decision to reject their claim for a pay increase of 1% above inflation.
And union official Nick Corbel called upon the three politicians who make up the States Employment Board to get around the negotiating table to avert a strike.
The States Employment Board chairman, Chief Minister Frank Walker, was unavailable for comment as the Council of Ministers are meeting their counterparts in Guernsey.
Due to the practicalities of organising the workplace ballot, Mr Corbel said it was unlikely it would take place before Christmas.
