Jeffrey Wallace placed a Canadian flag on the memorial stone at Noirmont close to the point where Warrant Officer Donald McPhail, who was serving with 263 Squadron, RAF Fighter Command, was killed in 1942 while attacking a German convoy sailing off the south coast.

He was shot down over the headland along with Sqn Ldr Robert Woodward, whose widow unveiled the memorial to them in 2002.

Mr Wallace, who has worked at the Royal Bank of Canada in Jersey for six years, said he was keen to pay his respects to a Canadian who was ‘a long way from home’.

‘It’s is a really big deal in Canada.

I was on the internet last night and I saw there celebrations for Remembrance week and decided I would go out at first light and mark the gravestone of McPhail with a flag.

‘It is what people do on Remembrance Day all over Canada,’ he said.
