Drew Blatchford (28) was trying to paddle on a lifeguard rescue board anti-clockwise around the Island when someone walking their dog at La Moye called the Fire and Rescue Service after seeing him about a kilometre out to sea.

Initial reports were confused, but it seems that a harbour craft was despatched out to Mr Blatchford, who spoke to his would-be rescuers for a few minutes.

He then carried on paddling east towards St Aubin’s Bay, but a pilot boat from the Harbour told him to stop after he started heading towards the shipping lanes.

Mr Blatchford came ashore at West Park – but will make another attempt at the circumnavigation on the spring tide in a fortnight according to fellow lifeguard Scott Hammerton, who was part of his support team.

Assistant Harbourmaster Captain Paul Mimmack said a pilot boat had gone out to Mr Blatchford and told him to stop and come ashore as soon as possible.
