The Employment Tribunal made the landmark ruling yesterday after it was asked by two employees of a local security firm to interpret the Employment Jersey Law 2003.

It was understood that many employers, including G4S Security Services (Jersey) Ltd, were not giving staff the benefit of bank holiday pay unless they worked on one.

But the tribunal ruled that this was unfair.

The case came to the tribunal after Brendan Renehan and Michael Bird, both employees of G4S in Rue des Prés, asked the Jersey Advisory and Conciliation Service about the issue.

The response the pair got, although accurate, did not seem to address their exact points.

Unable to comment any further, the employees were pointed in the direction of the Employment Tribunal.
