Joseph Francis Hamon, who was 86, died in Ridout House Residential Home in Midvale Road on 28 April, refused nourishment for a number of days before he died.
At an inquest into his death, deputy viscount Peter de Gruchy said that Mr Hamon had been unwell since his wife contracted cancer and died ten years ago and he had eventually become ‘tired and given up on life’.
But Mr de Gruchy refused to record that he had taken his own life.
‘Mr Hamon by no means committed suicide in the classical sense of the term’, he said.
Mr Hamon was suffering from heart and gall bladder diseases as well as long-term pancreatitis, among other conditions, when he died.
