Bird expert Mike Stentiford said there was no need for panic but said that if dead birds were found, then the authorities should be alerted just in case.

‘It is a case of staying vigilant,’ he said.

Today in England tests were being carried out on dead swans while in France at the weekend the first cases of the H5N1 virus were detected in dead ducks near Lyon.

Environment director Chris Newton said dead birds should not be touched and anyone who finds one should call 866200.
