Although the risk of avian flu coming to Jersey is still considered to be low, the Planning and Environment Department want to be able to keep track of where stocks of birds are around the Island.

Environment director Chris Newton said this morning that they were setting up the register as a precaution.

‘There is no immediate threat,’ he said.

‘We need to increase our level of preparedness, which would help, should we ever have to face an outbreak of avian influenza in Jersey.’
