And the annual report of the States police published today reveals there is a backlog of over 500 cases waiting to be dealt with.

States police Chief Officer Graham Power said the unit’s capacity has been ‘simply overwhelmed’ by the number of cases reported.

Meanwhile the police say only half of Jersey-registered trust companies have submitted a suspicious activity report and in 22% of cases these were prompted by investigations by the joint financial crimes unit.

Mr Power said: ‘I have no problem with the professionalism and hard work of the officers.

However, they are having to prioritise and investigate cases where the reputation of the Island could be at risk.’ The annual report says Jersey risks breaching new international financial integrity standards to which the Island has subscribed.
