Grouville Constable Dan Murphy said he would consider bringing a proposal to the States for compulsory licensing if he cannot reach an agreement with cycling clubs over the way riders behave while biking in packs on the coast road.

‘I am generally against bureaucracy but if there is no progress I could well bring proposals for reintroducing licence plates so individuals who ride dangerously or make rude gestures can be identified.

He will have the support of St Clement Constable Derek Gray for the move if groups of riders continue to cause problems.

Mr Murphy said he had no problems with cyclists generally but had received many complaints about how packs of cyclists had behaved.

Earlier this week, it was revealed that Mr Murphy and riders from Vélo Sport Jersey (VSJ) had clashed on two occasions after he pulled up in his car to stop them while they were riding in a pack.
