The couple were married on 7 February in 1946 at St Andrew’s Church after meeting during the Occupation at Gaudin’s tea rooms.

At that time, Reg was training to be a solicitor at Crill and Benest and Monica was working in the Essential Commodities Office above Burton tailors in King Street.

He was going out with another girl called Monica, but the girl of that name who was to become his life partner soon became the only one for him.

With the Island still in the grip of German occupying forces, their courtship was restricted to walks and cycle rides.

Their meetings had to be carried out within the strict bounds of curfew restrictions – for Monica, who lived at Rozel, there was a 9 pm curfew and for Reg it was essential he returned home in the town by 10 pm.
