David Esterson, who has been a Jersey resident for 40 years, has spent the past four years since he retired as a 747 pilot with British Airways battling with HM Revenue and Customs.
Last week he finally defended himself in London’s High Court, only to have his submission turned down.
The essence of the problem lies in the double taxation agreement negotiated between Jersey and the UK in 1952, which applies to the salaries of Jersey residents working in the UK but not to private-sector pensions.
The same rule applies in Guernsey.
