Policy and Resources want to reverse a previous States decision and put the holding of the census back to 2011.
They say there are other surveys that do a good enough job of providing information on the Island population.
They have lodged a proposition calling for a delay on the census – which the States have agreed should be held next year – calling it a waste of £500,000.
And the committee say that in any case, it would not be possible for the States’ statistics unit to carry out a census next year because their resources are already committed.
P&R say that Jersey should ‘follow the rest of the world’ and adopt a ten-yearly census cycle.
The States previously backed a move by the Constable of St Helier, Simon Crowcroft, to hold a census next year, against P & R’s wishes.
Mr Crowcroft says that if it is inevitable that the five-yearly census cycle will be broken, their case will be strengthened.
He said: ‘One of the problems of the last debate was that the issue became narrowed around whether you were in favour of immigration or not, and having these regular censuses was seen as an anti-immigration position, and that was not my position at all.’
