Committee president Senator Len Norman said that the 150-year-old breakwater had taken a real battering from the sea ever since it was built and was now in need of major attention.
‘The worst damage is at the end, and if it is that bad then obviously the rest of it will be at risk.
‘We need to make sure that it’s going to be sound for the next 150 years or more,’ he said.
Work started on the breakwater in 1830 when the plan was to create a naval base in the bay.
Work began later on the second arm from Archirondel, but the project was halted by the diminishing threat of French attack and changes in naval ship design.
