On Saturday, the weekly consumer column’s Question of the Week asked: ‘Would you use direct late-night flights to Alicante and Malaga?’ Just under 100 have voted so far, either texting or e-mailing their response to say that they would be in favour of using such a service.

Just one vote has been lodged against.

Last week it was revealed that Flybe had been unable to persuade the authorities to extend the opening hours of the Airport so that they could start direct flights to Malaga and Alicante.

This morning Ian Taylor, Flybe’s general manager in the Channel Islands, said: ‘This survey is a good illustration of the desire and demand that exists in people in Jersey to be able to use direct flights to European destinations at what are traditionally thought of as less favourable travel times.

‘I must say that I am not surprised by the result because we were aware that there was a demand for this kind of service.

Unfortunately, it is now too late to schedule in flights for 2006, so the planned direct flights to Spain are off the agenda for now.’ The voting on Fair Play’s Question of the Week closes tomorrow evening.

To register a vote, text the word ‘Spain’ followed by either ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to 0762 480 3210.

All texts are charged at local rate.
