The staff have all withdrawn from the ‘voluntary’ rosters because they believe the pay levels on offer for being on stand-by are significantly below those available to civil servants.

Transport and General Workers Union official Nick Corbel said the staff do not believe the pay rates on offer are attractive enough to merit not being able to relax when they have time off.

‘Being on stand-by means they can be called in by the employer at a moment’s notice.

It means they cannot make plans to spend time with families of friends in case they are required to work.

It also means they cannot have a drink,’ he said.
