And it was the generosity of one anonymous guest which has taken them that close.
The charity auction raised £155,000 and the mystery benefactor – a patron of the appeal – made good his promise beforehand to double whatever was raised.
He was not the only one to show extraordinary generosity – author Harry Patterson also handed over £65,000 for a Mini Cooper cabriolet.
Actors Rula Lenska , John Nettles and John Altman were on hand for the glamourous event, as was crooner Stuart Gillies and CI Traders chairman Tom Scott.
Ms Lenska was modelling a diamond necklace for the event, and inviting party-goers to guess its weight in ‘carats’ to win a prize.
GOSH appeals committee chairman Robin Rumboll said that the appeal, which is due to close at the end of the month, is bearing down fast on its target of £1.5m.
The money will be used to fund a Jersey floor for the hotel that has been built adjoining the hospital.
