The JEP’s picture editor, Peter Mourant – who was to join the crew for the first leg of the race – fractured an ankle early this morning after slipping on deck.

The injury is not thought to be serious, but Mr Mourant was advised to return to shore for treatment following a consultation with a GP on board.

The Clipper was diverted to Fishguard in South Wales where Mr Mourant was transferred to a lifeboat and then taken to Withybush Hospital.

This will be a blow to both Mr Mourant and the crew, who celebrated the race start yesterday by releasing hundreds of red and white balloons over the River Mersey in Liverpool.

Over 100,000 people lined the river banks to watch Olympic rower James Cracknell fire the start gun for the 35,000-mile circumnavigation that will see ten crews compete for gold.

A celebratory carnival of street theatre, live music and an aerobatic display was staged and a flotilla of more than 80 boats filled the port.
