And three men who rescued a drowning boy from the sea were also praised for their brave actions.
In March last year the former boyfriend of murdered nursery nurse Tracy Burns received two phone calls from Ms Burns as she was being attacked in Paris Lane by Paul Greenan, then 18 years old.
Filipe Henriques rushed to the scene and found Greenan trying to climb over a wall.
He ran after him, caught him and pinned him to the ground until the police arrived and arrested him.
Greenan has been convicted of her murder and is due to be sentenced this autumn.
Also commended by the Chief of Police were surfers Matthew Webster and Michael Charlton and swimmer Dag Veiby, who rescued Bryn Butler (6) from the swirling waters of St Ouen’s Bay on 19 June.
Despite their heroic efforts, they were unable to save Anthony Christon (46), who drowned.
