Flight AX702 was the 11.30 am departure but the incident happened at about 1 pm and the flight had 13 passengers on board at the time.
The Trislander aircraft, registration G-BEDP, had just left the stand and begun to taxi towards the runway when the pilot spotted smoke coming from the wheel.
He immediately stopped the aircraft, got out and put out the fire with the plane’s extinguisher, following ‘standard safety procedures’.
The passengers were all taken back to the terminal and waited for some hours for a back up aircraft to bring them to the Island.
