National Autistic Society research director Richard Mills has been working closely with a range of agencies in the Island as well as with parents of autistic children to ensure increased co-ordination between them.
The project has been organised by the Special Needs Service and support group Autism Jersey.
Services represented at a recent meeting to discuss the proposed strategy included Housing, Education, Employment and Social Security, Health and Social Services, and parents and local support groups.
Mr Mills said that most children with autism tended to do better if they lived in a structured environment and if people had reasonable expectations of them – neither too high nor too low.
‘They respond to a calm atmosphere with little clutter and noise around them.
If things can be organised for them in that respect, they can cope better with other areas of their lives,’ he said.
