But P&R president Senator Frank Walker has hit back, saying that an arbitrary height restriction could blow the scheme out of the water, costing the Island hundreds of millions of pounds worth of free development and future rent revenue.

Deputy Breckon lodged a proposition last week which would limit any new waterfront development – including the proposed 20-storey Castle Quay project – to a maximum of six floors.

And he wants to know why States Members including Senators Walker and Terry Le Sueur and Deputies Gerald Voisin, Lyndon Farnham and Terry Le Main are actively promoting the Castle Quay project – a commercial venture which he says will net millions for developers.

Deputy Breckon says that days after lodging his proposition to limit any waterfront development to six storeys, he received an e-mail from Senator Walker saying that he could have already cost Jersey ‘tens of millions’.

Senator Walker has defended his position, saying that the people backing the proposed waterfront schemes will take their money elsewhere if the scheme becomes unviable.
