The decision to shut the plant was taken on Saturday to enable work to be carried out to boiler tubes.

It is expected to be back to full working capacity by Wednesday.

Environment and Public Services’ chief officer John Richardson said the closure would not affect the processing of waste.

He said there was sufficient capacity to deal with the parish waste until the incinerator was back on line.

The States last week sanctioned the next stage in finding a replacement for the existing plant.

Emissions from the current plant exceed international health standards and Environment are working towards a new plant being operational by 2009.

Approval of the Solid Waste Strategy after a two-day debate means Environment can proceed with the formal tendering process to commission a £75 million replacement.

Five suppliers have made the short list, intruding alternative technologies to incineration.
