It is hoped that the development, which should be complete by 2010, will allow for a greater frequency of boats to the Channel Islands and improve the tourist industries of the entire La Manche area.

The renovation is something that Senator Len Norman, president of the Harbours and Airport Committee, believes will stimulate Jersey tourism as well as that of the Norman coast.

‘The islands are always going to attract visitors,’ he said.

‘If Granville attracts more tourists, then more people will come to Jersey.’ The plans for the new marina aim to make use of the land around the current harbour, which is currently a collection of dilapidated warehouses and a junkyard.

They also hope to incorporate some of the old features of the harbour into its new design, retaining, for example, the large dry dock in the current fishing marina.
