The States are due to discuss the Legislation Committee’s Draft Shops Trial Arrangements regulations next week.
The committee is suggesting that the current regulations, which list a small number of items that can be sold on a Sunday, should be completely suspended for four months, allowing a virtual free-for-all for any shop wishing to open, provided the Constable of the parish agrees.
But the Chamber of Commerce say that there could be ‘significant operational issues’ in terms of the new Employment Law and extra costs, such as rubbish collection.
They are particularly angry because, they say, the Legislation Committee has not consulted them at all and they think that the trial is unworkable.
