After the joy of silver and bronze in the fours the previous day, it was the turn of the pairs and singles to take centre stage.
Eileen Vowden and Jersey’s oldest competitor in Shetland, 72-year-old Myrtle Le Marquand, got the pairs campaign off to a winning start with a comfortable 17-6 victory over Orkney.
They followed that up with a 16-8 win over Ynys Mon to be level with Guernsey’s Mavis Richards and Lianna Bichard at the top of the section three table at the end of play.
The strong Guernsey pair await them today, but in this form the Jersey pair won’t be fazed by the challenge.
Melvyn Birch and Mike Videgrain also started their campaign well, recording a 25-16 win over Ynys Mon.
That was also followed up by a second victory, this time over Alderney’s Anthony Willis and Paul Richardson, 24-6.
They top their group and face the Isle of Man to decide top spot this evening.
The singles competition also got under way, with former rugby player Will Waymouth tackling Duncan Maclean of new boys Western Isles.
Honours were shared at 19-all.
Jean Holmes went down 21-13 to Shetland’s Anne Robertson, but is in no way this team’s ‘weakest link’ and still has time to make an impact on the medals today.
But that does mean taking on and beating Guernsey’s world star Alison Merrien today.
