Jersey will be one of 23 islands from across the globe descending on the northern Scottish isles for a week of intense sports competition.
This morning, two special charter flights were due to leave Jersey at around 9 o’clock to fly the 200-strong team of athletes, officials, family and media to the Shetlands.
Once there, they will prepare for this evening’s opening ceremony in the capital, Lerwick, where competitors from as far afield as the Falklands, the Cayman Islands and St Helena and from as close as Orkney, Anglesey and the Isle of Man will parade around a stadium to the cheers of their friends and family and locals.
Carrying Jersey’s flag at the opening ceremony will be team physiotherapist Morag Obarska, who is attending her seventh games as part of the medical team.
She said: ‘It’s going to be a bit nerve-racking, but it will also be a very proud moment for me and I am really excited and can’t wait.
‘I’ve known that I will be carrying the flag for a month or so now, and the day has finally arrived.
But I think I am going to be having a busy day on Saturday, as 12 athletes have already been to see me this week with injuries, and I think there will be a good chance I will be treating people even before the opening ceremony.’ *All next week the Jersey Evening Post will be bringing you the very best reports and pictures from the Games, and regular updates and breaking news will be on our website, www.jerseyeveningpost.com/islandgames.
