Liberal Democrat councillor Chris Thomas , who is a cabinet member in Eastleigh Borough, says that aside from environmental benefits, Jersey could make money through a rethink on solid waste.
His borough has the second-best performance record on recycling in the UK, and he says that whereas the Island does well in some areas, it is well behind the times in others.
‘The whole strategy seems to be “”We are going to be making more and more of this stuff, so we need to a build a more and more massive facility””,’ said Mr Thomas (53), who aims to move to the Island permanently.
‘It’s the wrong way round.
Burning rubbish has environmental issues, not least of which are the heavy metals that come out of the chimney.
I would encourage, through the political process, a major debate into the environmental aspects of the whole thing, not least the carbon dioxide emissions.’ Asked what he would have said if he had been allowed to address States Members before the debate, Mr Thomas said he would have urged them to go back to the drawing board.
