And the company concedes that it took a gamble when it moved into two warehouses three months ago, without States permission, in order to service its biggest fulfilment contract yet.
But while Jersey Post still does not know if it will stay in the former Jacksons premises at Rue des Prés it still hopes its gamble will pay off.
‘We moved in before formal States approval because the sites were perfect for us and we were keen to secure them,’ said Bob Jones, managing director of Jersey Post’s fulfilment division, Jersey Post Logistics.
‘We also thought that we would be an incorporated company by now, as the target date was 1 May, which would have meant that we didn’t need States backing anyway.
‘We were also confident that the States would support us because the contract is with a retailer with a legitimate presence in Jersey and isn’t the type that the States are trying to clamp down on.’ That retailer is UGD, whose brands include Britannia and Channel.com.
The company has moved its headquarters from the UK to Jersey and now employs around 15 people in the Island.
Senior politicians have recently sought to apply the brakes to the burgeoning sector by dissuading retailers who have no physical presence in the Island from channelling goods through Jersey to avoid VAT.
